ABOUT THE MACS TOURNAMENT EXPERIENCE...

The Mac’s Tournament has been a Christmas tradition in Calgary since 1978.
Teams, fans, scouts and volunteers from Calgary and across the world attend this hockey tournament on an annual basis. Known as a first class event and an opportunity for athletes both male & female to measure their skills with other participants from Canada, the United States and Internationally. Former Mac's tournament participants say that it is truly a "The Mac’s Experience."

The Mac’s Tournament is a volunteer run organization.  Individuals from all walks of life are involved in this event in various ways. Committee members dedicate the entire year to planning and organizing the annual week-long event. Key area volunteers work in various aspects of the tournament during the week to help run the first class event. The hockey association partners provide the volume of volunteers who fulfill the shorter shift requirements. When all is said and done there are over 2,300 volunteers who help bring this event into place each Christmas. Everyone has a special interest and enjoys their own experience through the tournament, and the Mac's committee members continue to recruit and involve people from the Calgary and area community.

The tournament is very fortunate to have a major sponsor Mac’s Convenience Stores, and is always looking for additional sponsorships as the magnitude of the event is very large.  Visiting teams to Calgary enjoy the friendly and first class accommodations of a couple of the city’s hotels; the Westin Calgary located in the heart of downtown Calgary provides easy access to public transportation and the various needed amenities. The Westin houses the male teams for the tournament. The Delta Bow Valley is also located in the heart of the city and is just down the road from the Westin. The Delta is home to the female teams. All teams staying at the host hotels are transported to and from games, practices, tournament events and ceremonies by a reputable Motor Coach company.

Max Bell Centre is the main venue for the tournament. With two ice surfaces and all of the required amenities it serves as an excellent home for the tournament. The main rink seats 2,121. In addition, there is room for 1,000 for standing room. The opening ceremonies that takes place the night of December 26th plays to a full house and kicks off the week of excitement. Father David Bauer is the second venue with an Olympic sized ice surface and along with the Flames Community Arenas ice sheets serve as outstanding locations and homes for the competition. These venues host all of the Round Robin and Playoff games for both the male and the female divisions in the tournament. The Championship Finals are both played at the Pengrowth Saddledome home of the National Hockey League Calgary Flames. The male and female Championship Finals are televised live from this first class facility.

The Mac’s Tournament is known throughout North America. An average of 150 scouts and recruiters travel from across North America to watch potential players for Junior, College, University and N.H.L. teams. The local and regional media interest creates excitement and interest for all of the Calgary and area communities. The annual Press Conference kicks off a two week blitz of promotion and advertising in local Mac’s Stores, newspapers, radio and television.

The tournament has an extensive awards program that recognizes athlete performance on a game by game basis and for the over-all tournament. Along with our awards sponsors Tuxedo Source for Sports and the individual award sponsors we are able to provide the players with some outstanding prizes. Currently on both the male and female categories there is a Mac’s Tournament Scholarship Program. Submissions from each team and interviews by a dedicated committee provides a player from each pool with a Scholarship for their use when they move onto post-secondary educational opportunities.

Tournament Champions are presented with the “Mac’s Cup”. These trophies are second to none and capture the history of the tournament champions since its inception.
